GDC 08: Isamu Kamikokuryo’s GDC session summary
Square Enix’s Isamu Kamikokuryo had a pretty interesting session at this year’s GDC, in which he was mainly discussing the process of making art for Final Fantasy. Just before the end of the session, Isamu Kamikokuryo played an old Final Fantasy XIII trailer, but the peak of the show was right after it when he showed new concept art of the game, which according to many sources was beautiful. Square Enix personal did not allow anyone to take pictures, obviously. Here’s a snippet from Joystiq’s article:
“Concept art from the upcoming PS3 RPG was showcased, and it was absolutely stunning. We were able to see Cocoon, a giant green planet, encompassed by clouds. Green water, seemingly falls off the edge of this mysterious, enchanting planet. It’s supposedly one of the main stages of the game. We got to see another area called Pulse, which appears to be a lush jungle environment. In the horizon, one can see the world of Cocoon.
We also had a chance to see more of the incredible airships and vehicles that will be available in the game. Most intriguing are these insect-like green hovering autobikes, with nymph-like creatures riding them. They’re “the new Chocobo,” Theodore joked.”"

GDC 08: White Engine renamed to Crystal Tools
Taku Murata’s session at the GDC had some very interesting information: The White Engine, which is being used in Square Enix’s next generation PlayStation 3 title Final Fantasy XIII, has been renamed and is now called Crystal Tools. The engine is designed to work with the PlayStation 3, Xbox360 and the PC.
The interesting part was when Taku Murata said some of the engine’s features will work on the Wii, although, “it’s a secret”. Is Square Enix planning to release more titles on the Wii?
GDC 08: No comment from S-E regarding The Crystal Bearers
Ever since Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King and haven’t shown any footage of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers in recent events, including the current GDC, rumors say the game has been cancelled.
Following their session about developing for the Wii Ware, Toshiro Tsuchida and Fumiaki Shiraishi were asked what’s the current status of The Crystal Bearers. The developers didn’t have any response whatsoever, and only said “we should wait for an official press release”.
In an interview with Square-Enix’s Public Relations team one of the questions asked was if the 2008 release date rumor for FFXIII was true. They said that Fabula Nova Crystallis will not be released this year and the reason for this rumor going around is most likely a mistranslated/misunderstood magazine scan. So it looks like there’s still another year or so until its ACTUAL release. I would say 2009, but I don’t want to start any rumors… xD

I was browsing some of my friends’ site when I cam across this interessant piece of news. Some sites, like me, are saying FF13 will be released this year. Square Enix however denied it, and in a small interview by Famitsu they clearly state it:
· Will FFXIII be released in 2008?
All the information about that is false and Nomura/Toriyama never said the game will be released during 2008.
· What caused that rumor?
The websites overseas probably mistranslated Toriyama when he said the development team is hoping to release a battle system demo in 2008, and “finally get the experience you wanted”.
· To conclude, what is the current status of FFXIII, and when will we hear more information?
The PR department has stated that the progress of all Fabula Nova Crystallis games is going well, and the company always releases new information in events and through the media.
With many thanks to Forever Fantasy and Famitsu. All credit goes to them!

The slow trickle of Final Fantasy XIII information continued in this week’s Famitsu with a huge blowout that, when scrutinized, really offered just a couple of new details on the PS3’s biggest Japanese title yet.
In the feature, we’re reintroduced to everything we know about the main entry in the FFXIII franchise. We’ve already heard about Cocoon, a floating colony world created by crystals. Cocoon protects its millions of citizens through technology and mechanization. It contrasts with Pulse, the natural world which lay below it. The residents of Cocoon fear Pulse.
Regarding these two conflicting worlds, Famitsu reveals that Pulse, while not mechanized like Cocoon, has crystals itself, although their role is unclear. The magazine also reveals what appears to be a resident of Pulse, a pigtailed young woman whose name we’ve yet to learn. This girl was first introduced in the latest installment of the slowly expanding FFXIII trailer, which was shown at the Jump Festa event late last year.
A CG scene in the magazine’s screen shots shows pigtail girl standing on a cliff looking out over a distant landscape of Pulse. Below her, large, tusked dinosaur-like creatures herd through a river valley. Above her in the distance, looking somewhat like a moon, Cocoon floats in the cloudy daylight sky.
The magazine also makes first mention of two types of creatures in the FFXIII world: Farsi and Lusi. The Farsi are supernatural beings who built Cocoon. Their relationship with the crystals is unclear. The Lusi are people who were chosen to carry out particular orders from the Farsi. The exact details of those orders are also being kept a secret for now.
Famitsu speculates that the previously introduced main character, Lightening, is a Lusi, as she has been chosen by the crystals as “the enemy of humanity who will bring about the downfall of the world.” Incidentally, Lightening is not her real name, meaning we still don’t know the names of any of the FFXIII characters. The magazine also speculates that pigtail girl and the male character who sports a bandanna in previous trailers are also Lusi.
Past trailers have introduced us to one summon, a version of Shiva which transforms into a motorcycle. The latest Jump trailer, and week’s Famitsu as well, offered a first look at Ifreet and Carbuncle, the latter being a cute creature that should be familiar to Final Fantasy series veterans. The trailer showed Carbuncle emerge from a large laserdisc-like disc when the pig-tailed girl took the disc in her hands. It’s unclear if these two new summons will, like Shiva, transform into vehicles.
Summons appear to have a major role in the game. They will be used outside of battle and as part of the story, as shown in the bike transformation sequence from past trailers, where Shiva comes to the assistance of bandanna guy.
The article closed off with the promise of a first real look at Final Fantasy XIII running off the PlayStation 3 sometime later this year. Looks like the trickle will become a flood shortly that will hopefully contain actual character names so that we can stop saying bandanna guy and pigtail girl.
